What it is
An Inipi is a purification ceremony held inside an enclosed, stone-heated lodge — very hot, very dark, humid, sweat running the whole time, door closed through each round. It's one of the oldest ways we know of clearing what's carried in the body and mind. People come to mark a threshold, to grieve, to give thanks, to reset.
This is a ceremony, not a wellness treatment — it isn't medically supervised, and it doesn't treat or cure anything.
The heat is real risk: dehydration, heat exhaustion, fainting, strain on the heart or breathing, and it can be intense if you're prone to anxiety in small dark spaces. This is a dangerous recreational activity, and we give you this warning under the Civil Liability Act 2002 (NSW). Adults only. Before the day, everyone fills in a short health declaration — a "yes" doesn't rule you out, it just means we talk first (heart or blood pressure conditions, pregnancy, epilepsy, diabetes, respiratory or kidney issues, past heat illness, recent surgery, relevant medication, or severe claustrophobia).
- Arrive hydrated
- Drink water through the day beforehand. Eat something light — not a heavy meal, not an empty stomach.
- Bring
- A towel, water, and loose clothing you can sit in and do not mind getting wet, muddy or smoky.
- Wear
- Natural fibres. Nothing synthetic — it holds heat against the skin. Leave jewellery and metal behind.
- No alcohol or drugs
- Nothing in the 24 hours before, and nothing on the day. This is a safety rule, not a moral one.
- Come early
- The fire is lit long before the lodge. Arriving late means arriving into a ceremony already in motion.
Book your place
Twenty places, Saturday 5 September. Free to book — the form takes about three minutes and includes the fitness-to-participate declaration.
